Who and what is covered under my home insurance policy?
A home insurance policy usually includes your property (building, outbuildings and contents) and liability covers for the insured, including:
You and your spouse*
Any person under 21 in your care**
Dependents living away from home temporarily to attend school, college or university
*Spouse must live in the same household as you to be covered
**In Quebec, any person under 18 in your care.
Does the policy pay twice the amount insured if it's a joint policy?
A joint policy means the policy covers both policyholders; it doesn't double the payment amount.
What is a by-law coverage?
Building code and zoning law changes don't usually apply to existing buildings. However, if you suffer loss or damage to your dwelling, you may have to rebuild to current standards.
This coverage provides protection for new by-laws that would increase the cost of rebuilding or repairing your dwelling following an insured loss.
Although this coverage comes standard with some property policies, increased limits are available (in some provinces). Please connect with us to ensure that you have adequate coverage to protect you and your family.
What are my responsibilities when purchasing home insurance?
There are some general responsibilities involved in having insurance coverage, including but not limited to:
Being completely honest in your application (if you aren't, it can void your insurance coverage)
Knowing your obligations under your policy (it's best to discuss this with your Specialist before you ever need to make a claim, so you avoid any surprises)
Paying the premiums (if you don't, your coverage can be cancelled, with notice)
Notifying your insurer of any changes to your property (renovations, etc.)
Preventing or reducing the chance of further damage, keeping in mind that safety comes first
Will my insurance premiums increase over time?
Every case is different. Your Service Supervisor can answer this question, though. Just call 1.833.223.8740.
Does home insurance cover losses to watercraft owned by another party?
Your home insurance in most provinces*, will provide coverage for claims other than damage to the watercraft (or other recreational off-road vehicle) if:
You have consent to use the watercraft or vehicle
You are not racing
You are not using the watercraft or vehicle for business
The watercraft or vehicle is not subject to registration

Are there different types of home insurance I can purchase?
Yes. You may want home, condo, tenant, cottage or rental insurance. There are different types of cover available in each category*. There are also "add-on" features, depending on your personal circumstances. You'll want to consider how much insurance you need, and the deductible too (your portion of an insured loss), as this will affect your premiums.
Your Specialist can help you consider the options and pick the one that's right for you.
